Craving a cold, refreshing margarita but want to skip the alcohol? You definitely don’t have to settle for plain sparkling water with a lime wedge.
These non-alcoholic margarita recipes have everything I want in a good margarita: fresh citrus, plenty of flavor, a fun salted or sugared rim, and that icy, refreshing finish.
And because we’re making them without tequila, they’re perfect for anyone looking for festive alcohol-free drinks for summer parties, taco night, Cinco de Mayo, baby showers, or simply sipping on the patio.
I’m sharing five different flavors so you can switch things up: a classic lime margarita mocktail, spicy jalapeño margarita, watermelon margarita, strawberry margarita, and tropical pineapple margarita.
Best of all, you don’t need fancy bartending equipment or hard-to-find ingredients. Most of these come together in about five minutes.

What Is a Non-Alcoholic Margarita?
A non-alcoholic margarita, sometimes called a margarita mocktail or virgin margarita, is an alcohol-free version of the traditional cocktail.
Since we’re leaving out the tequila and orange liqueur, the trick is making sure the drink still has enough flavor. Fresh lime juice provides that signature tart margarita taste, while orange juice adds a little sweetness and citrus flavor.
Then we can play around with fresh fruit, sparkling water, jalapeños, and other simple ingredients to create different flavors.
And don’t skip the rim! That little touch of salt makes a surprisingly big difference.
What You’ll Need to Make Margarita Mocktails
You don’t need a fully stocked home bar for these recipes. A few basics will get you through all five.
Fresh limes are definitely worth buying rather than relying on bottled lime juice. You’ll also want ice, coarse salt or Tajín for the rim, and something to sweeten the drinks. I like agave because it dissolves easily, but maple syrup or simple syrup can work too.
A cocktail shaker is helpful, but not essential. A mason jar with a tight-fitting lid works perfectly well in a pinch.
For the fruit margaritas, you’ll need a blender.
Now for the fun part!
1. Classic Non-Alcoholic Margarita

Servings: 2
If you’re trying a margarita mocktail for the first time, start here. This version is simple, tart, lightly sweet, and incredibly refreshing.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup fresh lime juice
- 1/4 cup fresh orange juice
- 2 tablespoons agave nectar
- 1/2 cup sparkling water
- 1 cup ice
- 1 lime, cut into wedges
- 2 tablespoons coarse salt, for the rims
Instructions
- Run a lime wedge around the rim of two glasses.
- Pour the salt onto a small plate and dip each glass into the salt.
- Add the lime juice, orange juice, agave, and ice to a cocktail shaker.
- Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds.
- Divide between the two prepared glasses.
- Top each glass with sparkling water.
- Garnish with a fresh lime wedge and serve immediately.
Make It Your Own
Taste your margarita before serving. If you love a really tart drink, you may not need any extra sweetness. If it’s a little too puckery, add another teaspoon of agave.
For a fizzy margarita mocktail, add a little extra sparkling water just before serving.
2. Spicy Jalapeño Margarita Mocktail

Servings: 2
If you order the spicy margarita every time you see one on a menu, this one’s for you.
Fresh jalapeño gives the drink a gentle kick without overpowering the lime. You can also control the spice level, which is a big advantage when you’re making it yourself.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup fresh lime juice
- 1/4 cup fresh orange juice
- 2 tablespoons agave nectar
- 4–6 thin jalapeño slices
- 1/2 cup sparkling water
- 1 cup ice
- 2 tablespoons Tajín or coarse salt
- Lime wedges and jalapeño slices, for garnish
Instructions
- Rub a lime wedge around the rims of two glasses.
- Dip the rims into Tajín or coarse salt.
- Add the jalapeño slices and agave to a cocktail shaker.
- Gently muddle the jalapeño a few times to release its flavor.
- Add the lime juice, orange juice, and ice.
- Shake for about 15 seconds.
- Strain into the prepared glasses over fresh ice.
- Top each drink with sparkling water.
- Garnish with lime and a fresh jalapeño slice.
How Spicy Should You Make It?
For a mild margarita, start with two jalapeño slices per drink and avoid adding lots of seeds.
Want more heat? Muddle an extra slice or two.
I’d start conservatively because you can always add more jalapeño. Taking it back out after your mouth is on fire is considerably more difficult!
3. Fresh Watermelon Margarita Mocktail
Servings: 2
Watermelon and lime were made for hot summer days.
This non-alcoholic watermelon margarita is naturally sweet, juicy, and especially good when watermelon is in season. It’s also one of my favorite options for backyard cookouts because that bright pink-red color looks beautiful without requiring food coloring or fancy syrups.
Ingredients
- 2 cups seedless watermelon cubes
- 1/3 cup fresh lime juice
- 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
- 1 tablespoon agave nectar, or more to taste
- 1 cup ice
- 1/4 cup sparkling water
- 2 tablespoons coarse salt or Tajín
- Lime wedges and small watermelon wedges, for garnish
Instructions
- Run a lime wedge around the rims of two glasses and dip them into salt or Tajín.
- Add the watermelon, lime juice, orange juice, agave, and ice to a blender.
- Blend until completely smooth.
- Taste and adjust the sweetness if necessary.
- Divide between the prepared glasses.
- Add a splash of sparkling water to each glass.
- Garnish with lime or a small watermelon wedge.
Tip for the Best Watermelon Margarita
Use a ripe, sweet watermelon.
The sweetness of watermelon can vary quite a bit, so I recommend starting with just one tablespoon of agave. You might find that you don’t need any additional sweetener at all.
You can also freeze watermelon cubes ahead of time and use them instead of some of the ice for an extra-thick frozen margarita.
4. Strawberry Margarita Mocktail

Servings: 2
Have strawberries sitting in the refrigerator that need to be used? Turn them into margaritas!
Fresh strawberries add natural sweetness and a gorgeous color to this easy virgin strawberry margarita.
This one is especially fun for spring and summer celebrations, Mother’s Day brunch, Valentine’s Day, or a girls’ night when you want a festive drink without alcohol.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled
- 1/3 cup fresh lime juice
- 1/4 cup fresh orange juice
- 1–2 tablespoons agave nectar
- 1 cup ice
- 1/4 cup sparkling water
- 2 tablespoons coarse sugar or salt, for the rims
- Fresh strawberries and lime wedges, for garnish
Instructions
- Rub a lime wedge around the rims of two glasses.
- Dip the glasses into coarse sugar or salt.
- Add the strawberries, lime juice, orange juice, agave, and ice to a blender.
- Blend until smooth and slushy.
- Taste and add additional agave if needed.
- Divide between the two glasses.
- Top each with a splash of sparkling water.
- Garnish with a strawberry and lime wedge.
Fresh or Frozen Strawberries?
Either works.
Fresh strawberries give you a lighter, juicier drink, while frozen strawberries make the margarita thicker and more like a frozen restaurant-style margarita.
If you’re using frozen fruit, you may want to reduce the ice slightly.
5. Pineapple Margarita Mocktail

Servings: 2
For something a little more tropical, try this pineapple version.
Pineapple brings plenty of natural sweetness, while fresh lime keeps the drink from becoming too sugary. The combination is refreshing, fruity, and perfect for warm-weather entertaining.
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup 100% pineapple juice
- 1/3 cup fresh lime juice
- 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
- 1 tablespoon agave nectar, optional
- 1/2 cup sparkling water
- 1 cup ice
- 2 tablespoons Tajín or coarse salt
- Lime wedges and pineapple wedges, for garnish
Instructions
- Rub lime around the rims of two glasses.
- Dip each rim into Tajín or coarse salt.
- Add the pineapple juice, lime juice, orange juice, agave, and ice to a cocktail shaker.
- Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds.
- Strain into the prepared glasses over fresh ice.
- Top with sparkling water.
- Garnish with fresh pineapple and lime.
If your pineapple juice is already very sweet, taste the mixture before adding the agave. You may not need it.
How to Make the Perfect Margarita Mocktail Rim
A good rim instantly makes a homemade mocktail feel a little more special.
Pour your salt, sugar, or Tajín onto a small shallow plate. Cut a lime into wedges and run one around the outside edge of the glass.
Then gently dip the rim into your seasoning.
You can also rim only half the glass. I actually love doing this because you can alternate between salted and unsalted sips.
Try coarse salt for classic margaritas, Tajín for watermelon, pineapple, or spicy margaritas, and coarse sugar for sweeter strawberry margaritas.
How to Make Non-Alcoholic Margaritas for a Party
Making margarita mocktails individually is easy, but nobody wants to spend an entire party shaking drinks.
Luckily, these recipes are easy to scale.
Multiply the ingredients by the number of servings you need and combine everything except the sparkling water and ice in a pitcher. Refrigerate until your guests arrive.
Add sparkling water shortly before serving so it stays bubbly.
I also like setting out a small margarita garnish station with lime wedges, sliced jalapeños, strawberries, watermelon, Tajín, and salt. Everyone can customize their drink, and you don’t have to play bartender all afternoon.
Frozen vs. On-the-Rocks Margarita Mocktails
Can’t decide between frozen and on the rocks? Most of these recipes work both ways.
For a frozen non-alcoholic margarita, blend the ingredients with ice until smooth and slushy. Frozen fruit works especially well because it creates a thicker drink without watering down the flavor.
For an on-the-rocks margarita mocktail, shake the ingredients with ice and strain them over fresh ice.
The classic, spicy, and pineapple recipes are especially good on the rocks, while watermelon and strawberry are delicious blended.
Easy Ways to Customize Your Non-Alcoholic Margaritas
Once you’ve made one or two of these recipes, don’t be afraid to experiment.
Swap plain sparkling water for lime sparkling water, add fresh mint or basil to a watermelon margarita, or muddle cucumber into the spicy version.
You can also mix flavors. Strawberry-watermelon is delicious, and pineapple-jalapeño gives you a sweet-and-spicy combination.
For a stronger bittersweet flavor that more closely mimics the complexity of a cocktail, you can use an alcohol-free orange aperitif or non-alcoholic tequila alternative. Just check the individual product if avoiding alcohol completely is important to you, since products labeled “non-alcoholic” can vary.
Tips for Making the Best Non-Alcoholic Margarita
Fresh lime juice is the biggest upgrade you can make. Bottled lime juice works when you’re in a hurry, but fresh lime gives these drinks that bright, punchy flavor you expect from a margarita.
Don’t automatically add all the sweetener, either. Fruit varies in sweetness, especially strawberries and watermelon. Taste first and adjust from there.
And finally, use plenty of ice. Margaritas should be seriously cold.
If I’m serving these for friends, I also prep all my garnishes and rims before mixing the drinks. It’s a tiny bit of preparation that makes everything much easier once people arrive.
Which Margarita Mocktail Should You Try First?
If you want something closest to the original, go with the classic lime margarita.
Love heat? Try the spicy jalapeño margarita.
For a naturally fruity summer drink, the watermelon margarita is hard to beat. Strawberry is perfect when you want something sweeter, while pineapple gives you that tropical vacation feeling without needing an actual plane ticket.
Better yet, make a couple of flavors and turn them into a mini margarita mocktail bar.
These easy non-alcoholic margaritas prove that skipping alcohol definitely doesn’t mean skipping the fun part of the drink. Fresh citrus, colorful fruit, sparkling water, and a good salty rim give you plenty of flavor.
If you make one, I’d love to know which flavor you tried! Share this post with someone who loves a good mocktail, too.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a non-alcoholic margarita made of?
A simple non-alcoholic margarita can be made with fresh lime juice, orange juice, agave or another sweetener, sparkling water, and ice. Fruit, jalapeños, herbs, and other ingredients can be added to create different margarita mocktail flavors.
What can I use instead of tequila in a margarita?
You don’t necessarily need a direct tequila replacement. Fresh lime juice, orange juice, sweetener, and sparkling water make an easy margarita-style mocktail. You can also use a non-alcoholic tequila alternative if you prefer a drink with more cocktail-like complexity.
Can I make a non-alcoholic margarita without a blender?
Yes. Classic, spicy, and pineapple margarita mocktails can easily be shaken with ice instead of blended. A blender is most useful for frozen fruit margaritas such as strawberry and watermelon.
Can I make margarita mocktails ahead of time?
Yes. Combine the juices, fruit components, and sweetener ahead of time and refrigerate them in a covered pitcher. Wait to add ice and sparkling water until shortly before serving so the margaritas don’t become diluted or lose their fizz.
How do you make a frozen virgin margarita?
Add your margarita ingredients to a blender with about 1 cup of ice for every two servings. Blend until smooth and slushy. Using frozen strawberries, watermelon, pineapple, or other fruit can create an even thicker frozen margarita without adding as much ice.
