Canva Tutorial to Create the Perfect Pinterest Image

Canva tutorial to create the perfect Pinterest image. Step by step guide on how to make free amazing Pin images with canva.

I love using Picmonkey.com to create my images. But recently they switched to a paid service. I still prefer Picmonkey over Canva, but for all of you who simply can’t invest in a program like this yet (it’s less than $4 a month) here is a Canva tutorial so you can make your Pinterest images for free!

Why is it so important to make perfect Pinterest images?

When I re-did all of my Pinterest images, I grew my re-pin rate by 500%!! If your readers scroll through Pinterest YOUR image determines whether or not they will actually click-through to your page. Therefore the title, colors, font, background image and pin descriptions need to be convincing.

I create 2-4 different Pin images per blog post for two reasons. The first reason is simply to test different styles and titles and the second reason is to have more fresh content. Pinterest likes to see consistent fresh content, therefore I create multiple image and schedule them further out with a new description.

I create a more branded pin image that contains the same colors, style, and font, but I also like to experiment with new styles.

This tutorial and some of the flat lay stock photos are a part of the Pinterest Legacy course. To make a pin go viral you also need a compelling title and pin description that is based on a keyword research. If you don’t know what I am talking about, please check out the course for more guidance.

Open Canva.com and log in (I log in with my Facebook). For creating a Pinterest image you can either type in your custom dimensions, or just select the Pinterest Graphic from the list (select the + more button). The best ratio for a pin image is 2:3 and that would be 800×1200. Anything that is longer will not be shown as often anymore on Pinterest, so be sure to stick to the right dimension!

Now you have different options. You can upload your own images and drag them onto you template, use a background, add text and add overlays or collages.

If you are making a round-up post (for example with different recipes) you can simply click on “grits” and choose your design.

Then go to “upload” and upload the images you want in your collage. Simply drag them in position.

If you want a flat lay image as your background instead of a collage, simply select your Pinterest template and upload your desired image.

Add the text now or add an overlay to make your text pop. To add an overlay go to “Elements” and select “Shapes”.

You can make the overlay transparent to make your background picture shine through.

Now add your text and download your project!
